The Mona Passage is a critical and historically significant strait that separates the islands of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Caribbean Sea. Spanning approximately 130 km (80 miles), it serves as one of the most important shipping lanes in the Caribbean, making it a focal point for both modern commerce and historical maritime conflict.

Strategic Importance

A vital maritime chokepoint and WWII U-boat hunting ground, concentrating 20th‑century wrecks—especially tankers—with high potential pollutant loads.

Oceanography & Hazards

Powerful currents, deep trenches, and storms increase wrecking risk and can rapidly disperse released oil and hazardous materials.
